Santa & Jesus

Today, one of my fellow teachers mercilesslytold the 6-7-year-olds at our Sunday School group that

Santa Claus doesn’t exist.. I didn’t fully agree with what he did, but I know for sure I’m not going to lie my kids about Santa!

It is a cruel thing for children to find out that Santa Claus doesn’t exist -as kind, generous and lovable as he was depicted.. let alone realizing the fact that their parents have been lying to them the whole time. 

When I started being a Sunday School teacher, my mother gave me an advice: never promise kids anything, because if you won’t keep/be able to keep your promise, they’ll remember it, be disappointed by you and maybe loose their sincere trust in you. The advice is perfect in this case, don’t you think? ..and I think it’s perfectly wise and worthy to be followed.

I mean.. come one.. once you’ve lied to them about Santa’s existence, what makes you think they’ll believe you about the existence of baby Jesus born of a virgin mother, put in a manger, near animals, heralded by angels, shepherds and kings.. and so on?! The historically-proven Jesus becomes just a neat fantasy Christmas story in their eyes! The divine Jesus is seen merely as a kind teacher that lived a long time ago -in the better cases; but in most cases they come to believe that He didn’t even exist, not knowing that historians, atheists and secular scholars had to admit that Jesus did live then and there and was as famous and wise as we’re told in the Bible.

I could write many about the topic, but I have a loong task ahead of me right now.. which I’d better finish tonight. C’ya l8r!
